Marching Through Georgia는 1864년, 

북군의 명장 윌리엄 테쿰세 셔먼의 전공과 대행진을 성공적으로 마친것을 기리는 노래.

1865년에 헨리 클레이 워크가 작곡, 셔먼이 참석한 자리에서 늘 연주되었다.

윌리엄 테쿰세 셔먼(William Tecumseh Sherman, 1820년 ~ 1891년)

미국 남북 전쟁 때 북군의 장군, 전면전을 응용한 장군으로 현대전의 창시자

그의 이름을 딴 전차도 존재.(M4 셔먼)

여러번 정치계 입문을 권유당하였지만, 모두 거부.  

미국의 남북 전쟁 직후에 나온 유행가인 'Marching through Georgia'(조지아주를 지나 진군할때)라는 곡에 가사만 만들어 붙인 것, 

당시 북군의 윌리엄 T. 셔먼 장군이 남군에게 큰 타격을 주며 조지아주를 가로질러 바다를 향해 진군해가는 과정을 묘사한 것. 미군에서도 많이 불러 지금은 군가 취급을 받는 노래,

이 노래는 여러 나라에서 곡만 차용되는 경우가 많다.
